Walk with me…

So as I was out on the lawn, slowly clunking and chunking my way through knee-high sodden grass, I reflected on a particular train of thought I’d had earlier today. Now my trains of thought are not your express City A – City B rapid and simple style… Oh no. Rather, I deviate off common tracks and end up in random stations in the middle of lazy outback towns and countryside – nowhere near where I had boarded the thought. It often happens that I say something to Storm and she says ‘how did you get there’. Upon hearing the various leaps and steps sideways through thought passages and detours, it is concluded that I am, indeed, a little ‘special’. And because my thought train took me to some really cool things today, I thought I would take you on the journey with me. Let’s stamp tickets and be off.

I returned home at lunch today to await the arrival of a ‘new’ fridge for the house. A return to shelf space and fresh (fridged) food was thoroughly welcome and appreciated. Due to logistical inconveniences, I contrived to stay at home and work on a report for work rather than trundle off through the rain to work (again). As I did so, I pondered the perfect musical choice. I decided on ‘An Acoustic evening with Ani Difranco’ from 1994, an album I’ve owned for some time but barely leant an ear to in its entirety. As Ani muttered and rambled through silence and poesy and partly tuned her guitar, she mentioned that ‘It’s a good thing I have such good friends in the business and that Artis will be selling cds and casettes for me as I play”. She went on to refer to him as “the fucking shit” and worth checking out.

So I did… Typing ‘Artis’ and ‘Ani Difranco’ into google delivered our train to its first destination – www.artisthespoonman.com. A wiki search on Artis the Spoonman reveals that, not only could he play two flutes simultaneously with his nose, the Soundgarden song SPOONMAN was written about him and that he features in the song and film-clip. And so the thought train set off to Youtube station for some visuals. A search for spoonman revealed the following fantastic video,

As amazing as it was – the man turned out to be a gentleman called Hannes Coetzee with quite a devotional following on YT – it was not what I was searching for. And so off I went to find a video of Spoonman. Sure enough it was there,

And then I found the video I was looking for -

So, from a word mid-song to a video of a guy playing guitar with a spoon, to the revelation that Spoonman (one of THE songs of my teenhood) was written for a guy that literally plays spoons (and plays them well).

Now, to find a video of him playing two flutes simultaneously with his nose!

Have the times a-changed?

Here is a depiction of Yellow Journalism with nasty little printers’ devils spewing forth from the Hoe press – Puck cartoon of Nov. 21, 1888.

I can’t make out all the words, but have the times changed that much in 119 years?

Chimps kick Human Butts!

This article from BBC news is cool… Watch the videos and check out how quick chimps are at remembering number sequences. So next time you’re captured in the jungle by a tribe of chimpanzees, don’t bet your life on a game of concentration or you might just end up ……

Now this is one recipe that is beyond me

How to make and bake some breaks

Apparently, the guy is Darren Foreman a.k.a – Beardy Man (UK Beat Boxing Champion)

Scream of the Crop

Ok, so it’s not my research but check this out :)

Isn’t she beautiful.??

Clockwise or Anti-Clockwise

This item has being doing the rounds recently, purporting to determine whether you are left- or right- brained. I haven’t been able to find it’s origin or why it was developed (whether it is indeed a test of interhemispheric switching).

However, it is cool and has been quite productive in arousing discussion and reducing productivity in the office and around the traps. Most people I know seem to think she turns clockwise most often (left-brained (or right, depending on which site you get the .gif from) ;) .

Some friends have not been able to change her direction of motion. I can get her to switch directions quite easily by focusing on a foot and telling the brain that she is heading in a given direction.

Have fun and let me know which you are!

Wow (again)…

Some people have way too much talent, creativity and time. I’m not sure if they’re the first but this was my first exposure to this sort of art. Website is PikaPika 2007 if you’re interested in more. Déjà Slam

It’s somewhat odd that only now am I realising how wonderful YouTube is. I’ve been aware of its existence for some time but had never felt the desire to explore the bowels of this behemoth. I must add that there are a lot of dags that come with the golden fleece; comments are often crude and users seem to get easily distracted into simple sledging matches. But if you avoid sections that comprise the obvious haunts of these potty-mouthed denizens, there are some fantastic snippets around.

My curiosity was recently perked by the phenomenon (used loosely) of slam poetry. I love the speed, wit and expression of slam poets like Steve Coleman, Beau Sia and Taylor Mali, whom I discovered on a first sweep of the ‘tube’. (Aside - the appearance of spontaneity is somewhat eroded when you view multiple videos of the same poem/monologue/rant). Still, as a lover of poetry and stand up, it does seem the marriage of the two forms sits rather well on my palate.

So as I sat at my desk enjoying my afternoon lunch (as opposed to morning lunch) and watching the following piece of slam poetry, I was struck with an overwhelming sense of déjà vu. Not being an overly complex creature, I’m still struck by the awesome nature of the feeling, a real sense of having experienced the exact snippet of existence once before. Previous episodes have been reminiscent of dreaming the future (as tacky as that sounds), but this one was particularly poignant.

I love the singularly unique nature of déjà vu as far as experiences go and the mysterious nature of the event. It’s one area that I hope that science doesn’t figure out. After all, imagine if déjà vu was simply caused by a magentic flux in the frontal lobe…whoopdy fuck. I prefer the somewhat romantic notion that déjà vu provides an indication that you were intended to reach that moment in life, however cynical and skeptical I choose to be in remaining areas of my life.

So enough of the ramble, here is a video of some slam poetry – not necessarily my favourite piece, but it is the one that gave me the déjà slam.

I think Steve Coleman’s slam is particularly good.
