I suppose the first post on music should outline my tastes so you can agree or ‘agree-to-disagree’ and never return to the music section again. Like most people these days I have a fairly broad musical taste but I definitely have a preferred style of music…Lo-fi and low-key seems to be my drift. Maybe it’s because I play the guitar, but I appreciate musicians who get on stage with not much more than themselves and a piece of hollow wood with strings.
It’s funny that we define ourselves so much by musical preferences these days that to say you like certain bands can evoke everything from heartfelt connection to the deepest condescension… “Oh you still like Dave Mathews Band? That’s SO late nineties man”…anyways, some of my current favourites are
Nick Drake, John Martyn, Tété, Django Reinhardt, Josh Rouse, Devendra Banhardt, Loren, Seth Lakeman etc.
Winamp informs me that my current top ten are
Damien Rice – Blower’s Daughter
Tete – Me Ressourcer
John Martyn – Head and Heart
John Martyn – The Cure (acoustic)
Vashti Bunyan – Diamond Day
John Martyn – Spencer the Rover
The Beautiful Girls – La Mar
Joanna Newsom – The Book of Right On
John MArtyn – Ain’t No Saint
Trash Can Sinatras – Freetime (KCRW Acoustic)
Other notable mentions are – Devendra -At the hop, Jeff Buckley – Mama you been on my mind, Bob Dylan – Don’t think twice, Simon and Gar – only living boy in new york, and Tete – Meilleur des Mondes…
Hey Jameses…came across your site link from Yaro’s. See you’re into Josh Rouse – I’m a big Josh Rouse fan…I even got a photo with him (he resembles a small troll like demi human).
I’m actually into Josh Rouse because of the CD you gave to Steph to give to me. Awesome stuff. I especially like Sad Eyes, My love has gone, It’s a miracle, and another one which I’ve forgotten at the moment.
Ahh yeah, I remember now! i should pass you on some cds of ‘The Decemberists’ – a really good band I just discovered (when I say discovered, its along the line of I’ve just started listening to them – but they’ve been around for years). Indie/indie folk music seems to be booming at the moment.
